No licence? Pas de problème! Drive the “no-licence” car

Oui. I know it sounds incroyable, but such a thing does exist in France.

The first I heard of it was this summer when my mother-in-law was over. We on the way into town when I noticed a large truck with a trailer attached and one of the kids commented on the “funny small car” on the trailer.

Oh, that’s a no licence car, says himself. And his maman nodded as if it was the most normal thing in the world. A what? Explain, says I. And this is what I found out.

Apparently, la voiture sans permis – or VSP – is a microcar that can be driven by anyone over the age of 14. The top speed attainable by these cars is 45km, so they can’t be driven on motorways.

Microcar: The Aixam 400

It’s perfect for little old dears who wouldn’t pass a medical. Or teenagers who are too young to drive a real car. Or even – I thought we were bad with our politicians telling people it’s okay to get behind the wheel with three pints of Guinness on them* – drivers who like to combine a few whiskies with a jaunt about the countryside.

I had a little Google afterwards – and found this interesting article on bbc.com. According to the writer you can’t buy these cars at a regular car dealership, but rather at special VSP outlets. The main manufacturer of these nifty little numbers is Aixam, but there are others, including Renault, which produces the Twizy.

Let’s hope the Healy-Raes* don’t get wind of this or they’ll be importing them en-masse for all the Kerry farmers.

*For anyone unfamiliar with Irish politics, the Healy-Raes are two brothers from Co Kerry who are both TDs (members of Parliament). Like their late father Jackie, who was also a TD, Danny and Michael have voiced their opposition to drink-driving legislation as they believe it impacts on rural communities. In 2013 when a video made by a German documentary crew about Danny’s (then councillor and publican, now TD) proposals to relax drink-driving, it went viral.
